The winner of our June Photo of the Month competition is Carol Best with her photo titled “Mackerel sky over the harbour”, congratulations Carol!
When we asked Carol what the inspiration behind her winning photo was, Carol revealed that she was just in the right place at the right time!
Carol told us that clouds that form a mackerel sky are cirrocumulus clouds, which are made up of lots of small white clouds called cloudlets, they can sometimes appear to look like the scaly skin of a fish and is referred to as a mackerel sky.
This peculiar phenomenon not only lends itself to artistic interpretation but also serves as a weather predictor, as the old saying goes "Mackerel sky, mackerel sky. Never long wet, never long dry."
